Nora is a 1 YO female sweetie who ate something she wasn’t supposed to while she was hanging out with her human nephew. She started vomiting, not eating, and acting very sick. She was diagnosed with a foreign body and aspiration pneumonia at a local specialty ER clinic. Aspiration pneumonia can happen when a patient vomits and they inhale the contents into their lungs. This can cause them to be very sick. Nora needed help as soon as possible. Nora was given intravenous fluids to correct her dehydration, intravenous antibiotics for surgery and her pneumonia, and we explored her abdomen. We found a small ball stuck in her small intestines! The intestines was completely blocked and part of her intestines had died, so we needed to resect the dead tissue and suture her intestines back together. We also spayed her at the same time, so that she would not have to worry about possible future pyometra. Nora was feeling better after surgery and even gave her mom so many kisses when she came to pick her up. Nora’s mom reports that she is gaining her energy and appetite back day by day. We hope to see Nora back fully recovered and a healthy happy pup. Thank you Nora for being such a perfect patient and thank you Nora’s mom for entrusting us with her care ❤️. #accessiblemedicine #veterinarymedicine #communitymedicine #onehealth #sheltermedicine #shelterintakeprevention #shelterintakediversion #wellness #giforeignbody #dogsofinstagram #pitbullsofinstagram #resectionandanastamosis #gisurgery

Vets in Vans and @alameda_animal_shelter had a joint event yesterday. We spayed and neutered 30 of their shelter animals that were waiting for surgery prior to adoption! We helped them with their surgery backlog, so that the animals can go to their forever homes. Look how cute everyone was! 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻

Nova is a 6MO male kitten who came to us after being diagnosed with a foreign body. Nova ingested something he wasn’t supposed to and he got very sick. He was seen by an emergency specialty hospital that confirmed a linear foreign body on abdominal ultrasound. Clients were unable to afford surgery at the emergency clinic, so they were looking at the only other humane option, euthanasia. The owners were devastated. The referral clinic informed them about our clinic and we were able to schedule them the same day. We removed a shoelace from the stomach and the intestines! The intestines were all bunched up or “plicated” from the linear foreign body. We were also able to neuter him, microchip, and give him all his vaccines at the same time as his surgery. Owners were very appreciative of our help and they let us know that Nova is doing great post surgery. He is back to eating and acting like an active kitten! We wish Nova and his family the best and hopefully Nova doesn’t encounter another shoelace unattended in the future! #accessiblemedicine #veterinarymedicine #communitymedicine #onehealth #sheltermedicine #shelterintakeprevention #shelterintakediversion #wellness #giforeignbody #kittensofinstagram #gisurgery

Prietitia is a 10YO FS Pomapoo who developed signs of straining to urinate, blood in the urine, painful urinations. Upon diagnostic work up, she was diagnosed with bladder stones from another clinic. She needed to have surgery for bladder stone removal. We were able to schedule her for surgery to remove her bladder stones. During surgery, we also flushed her bladder from the inside out to her vulva to make sure her urethra was patent for urinations. As you can see, many tiny bladder stones were flushed out of her body! We submitted the stones for analysis. This will help the veterinarians determine the next step for treatment. In addition to her surgery, Prietita came back for additional diagnostic work up for Cushings Disease. Dogs with Cushings Disease are more prone to bladder stone formation. Good news is, Cushings is very treatable and dogs can have a happy good quality of life with treatment! We saw Prietita a week after her surgery and she looked great! She was healing up nicely and her family noted that she’s doing very well in the home. We’re so happy for adorable teddy bear Prietita and we hope she lives a happy life without any more bladder stones!

Papas is a 9 month old male neutered cat that returned home after 3 days of missing. Owners noted that his mouth looked very swollen and abnormal. They said he was only drinking water and eating soft food. Upon exam, Dr. Tracy Huang found that his mouth appeared to have a symphyseal fracture with a mandibular lip avulsion. Dr. Huang suspected that Papas had sustained some trauma while he was missing from home. Papas needed urgent surgery to repair his jaw. Dr. Tracy Huang was able to suture the symphyseal fracture and surgically repair the lip avulsion. Papas was repaired beautifully! Papas family is so happy that he returned home, but also that he was back to his normal healthy self!
